The Penal Colony Film

Poster design for the short film The Penal Colony. The movie is based on Nadia’s Tolokonnikova imprisonment in Penal colony No. 14 in Russia. Contrary to what is predicted by the law, the prisoners are forced to work unpaid seven days a week from 16 to 17 hours daily, with no breaks for food, no bathroom breaks, under constant pressure to meet their quotas using old and broken sewing machines.

Faced with this impasse Nadya decides to go on a hunger strike, and not give up until the administration decides to respect the law and cease to treat prisoners like slaves. Additional credits to Sofia Tsalidou & Aliki Havella.

“I will not remain silent, resigned to watch
as my fellow prisoners collapse
under the strain of slavery-like conditions.”

Nadya Tolokonnikova
